[personal profile] katycat posting in [community profile] sun_salutation
I took a few yoga classes several years ago, and got a few DVDs, and have been practicing on and off ever since then. ... Well, okay, I mostly haven't been practicing. Until this past January, when I started up again with my videos and have been doing a fairly good job of keeping it up thrice-weekly! I definitely consider myself a beginner.

Anyway, a month ago I posted some reviews of the videos I have (and a general discussion of my practice), and I thought I'd share with the community: Marlon Braccia, Bollinger, and Suzanne Deason.

And a question: does anyone else tend to feel a lot of strain in their wrists from doing yoga? (I have very small wrists.) Is there a good way to mitigate that - other than "don't balance on your wrists"? Would 80s-style wristbands help, maybe?

I have felt strain in my wrists at random times as well, but not as much lately. Perhaps alternating doing sun salutation based practices with other practices might help?

anyone else?

thanks for posting!

Hey! So nice to meet you! I will toodle over to your reviews when I get home, but regarding your question about wrist support, I have seen a number of products advertised. I have no idea if they work or if they are advisable. I put in a google search on "yoga wrist support." This looks interesting.

Also, I was trying out a DVD called "Iron Yoga" this weekend. If you have some light dumbbells, you might try taking this DVD out of the library. He has a sequence of wrist strengthening exercises that might also help address your problem.

If you get the gloves, give us a review of them! You are not the first person who has mentioned problems with their wrists to me!

I have very weak arms, and I felt a lot of wrist strain when I was doing a lot of yoga. I tried to take it easy, anytime I felt like I was heading towards injury, and leave out certain poses until I felt better. After a while, I found that I'd simply built up enough strength, and it wasn't an issue anymore.

(Now I'm out of practice, and it'll be an issue all over again... but hey-ho. *g*)

But do be careful. Strains take forever to heal.

Aw, yes, it's frustrating. Someday you'll have that encouraging moment, though, where you suddenly realise: "Hey... I CAN OPEN JARS!!!" *g*

I've not often had this problem, myself. My wrists are fairly strong from playing musical instruments! I'd suggest stretching your hands and forearms more - little things like waggling your fingers, waving your hands about a bit - outside of yoga practice? Maybe that would help some.
