Of course it is ok! That is the fun of this comm. My only real exposure to Ashtanga yoga was something more likely to be called Power Yoga, a specialty of Rodney Yee. When you are looking for a class, you can ask specifically about Power Yoga/Ashtanga and see what they say. I would guess women's gyms might be inclined to have this class over a yoga studio.
One thing that is popular that I have not tried but several of my friends have with great success and enjoyment is Bikram. It is a high intensity yoga style done in a heated room and there are 26 postures.
